I spent a day running Matt Pocock’s skill set and found it genuinely good. If you ship code for a living, you feel right away how well it fits — without being over the top — because these skills are designed to fix the problems we run into all the time when working with a coding agent: the agent doesn’t get us, it talks too much, the code breaks, and the codebase turns into a ball of mud.
Here’s the simple rundown, grouped the way he organizes them.
Group 1: Before writing code (get on the same page first)
- /grill-me — The AI asks you a ton of questions before it starts anything. Say “build a login page” and it asks first: “Email or username? Is there password reset? Login via Google?” Once you’ve answered everything, then it builds — and you get something much closer to what you wanted.
- /grill-with-docs — Like grill-me, but it also remembers your project’s specific terms. If your app calls a user a “member” and a post a “story,” it writes that down in CONTEXT.md and never slips into the wrong names again. Saves a lot of tokens. The most powerful one in the set.
- /to-prd — Turns a conversation into a spec document (PRD) and files it as a GitHub issue.
- /to-issues — Slices a big plan into small tasks. “Build the checkout system” becomes 5 self-contained tickets.
Group 2: While writing code
- /tdd — Write the test first, then write the code — like writing the answer key before taking the exam.
- /diagnose — Detective mode for catching bugs. It reproduces the issue first, tells you where it broke and how to fix it, then writes a test so it won’t break again.
- /zoom-out — Tells the AI to step back and look at the big picture, e.g. “this file is used in 5 other places, you need to fix it a different way.”
Group 3: Keeping the codebase clean
- /improve-codebase-architecture — A deep clean for your code. Run it once a week.
- /triage — Tidies up a messy pile of issues.
- /setup-matt-pocock-skills — Run this first in a new project to get all the other skills ready to go.
Group 4: General helpers
- /caveman — Makes the AI talk in short bursts to save tokens.
- /write-a-skill — Helps you create your own skill.
Group 5: Safety
- /git-guardrails-claude-code — Stops the AI from wrecking your git history (e.g. blocks git push –force).
- /setup-pre-commit — Auto-checks your code before commit.
Too long, didn’t read? Here’s the gist:
- Before writing — use /grill-with-docs so the AI understands you first. Don’t let it jump straight to writing code.
- While writing — use /tdd to write the test first and the code after. When something breaks, use /diagnose.
- Cleanup — run /improve-codebase-architecture every 2-3 days.
- Save tokens — use /caveman during long sessions.
Honestly, just these four get you 80% of the value. Add the rest gradually later.
Skills ของ Matt Pocock...
GitHub issue
5: safety
- /setup-pre-commit — auto check code ก่อน commit
